FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hot tub related questions

What is the difference between a hot tub and a Jacuzzi?

As the pioneers of hot tubs, the Jacuzzi®  brand name has become synonymous with hot tubs. All Jacuzzi’s® are hot tubs, but not all hot tubs are Jacuzzi’s®. Jacuzzi ® created the first hot tub over six decades ago. Today, with more than 400 patents, they are recognised for offering some of the finest spas globally. Jacuzzi has established the benchmark for wellness; each of their hot tubs incorporates hydrotherapy, addressing various health issues. A hot tub also referred to as a spa, refers to a large tub of water available from multiple brands, including Jacuzzi.

How do I choose the right hot tub?

Selecting the ideal hot tub can be overwhelming, but our streamlined process simplifies your decision. You can browse through relevant categories or use our detailed filters to refine your search. Consider the following questions to guide your choice:

  1. Seating Capacity: How many people will use the hot tub regularly? Choose a hot tub that suits your regular user count. For instance, an 8-person hot tub may be unnecessary for just two users.
  2. Purpose: Why do you want a hot tub? If it’s for therapy, contact us directly for a personalised recommendation targeting your therapeutic needs. For holiday lets, use filters to explore commercial hot tubs. If it’s for social purposes, any model in our range may be suitable.
  3. Power Supply: Determine whether your premises can accommodate a 32 amp hot tub or if a 13 amp model is more feasible. Knowing your power capacity is crucial before starting your search.
  4. Urgency: If you need a hot tub urgently, consider models that are in stock for quicker delivery.

If you’re uncertain, don’t hesitate to contact us or visit our store. We’re committed to helping you find the hot tub that perfectly meets your needs.

What are the key differences between 13 amp and 32 amp hot tubs?

To understand the differences, let’s first examine the two types of hot tubs.

13 amp hot tubs place less strain on your power supply and are commonly used in locations with limited power availability, such as lodges and caravans. A significant advantage of the 13 amp model is its ability to operate from a 3-pin IP-rated outdoor socket. However, we strongly advise hardwiring any hot tub to a rotary isolator switch for safety.

The limitation of 13 amp hot tubs is that they typically feature a single pump, resulting in less powerful massages compared to their 32 amp counterparts. Additionally, due to their lower power capacity, these hot tubs cannot operate the heater simultaneously with the jets. This means if the jets are on for an extended period, the water temperature may decrease. But, the heater will resume once the jets are turned off.

On the other hand, 32 amp hot tubs require a more substantial power feed, directly connected to your mains consumer unit. Installation is usually straightforward for a qualified electrician. Opting for a 32 amp hot tub offers a more potent massage experience, and the ability to run the heater while the jets are active ensures that the water remains warm for a longer duration. For therapeutic purposes, we generally recommend choosing a 32 amp model.

What should I consider before my hot tub is delivered?

Access

  • Ensure sufficient access for delivery. Hot tubs are delivered on their side; minimum width equals the height of the hot tub plus 5cm for packaging and the ski (over 1 meter).
  • Measure the narrowest point, considering obstacles like window ledges, drainpipes, and gate posts.
  • If navigating steps, contact us for feasibility. Images may be required.
  • Consider a crane or Hiab for limited access areas.
  • Additional charges may apply for cranes, ramps, or extra personnel.

Electrics

  • Most hot tubs need a 32amp power supply with an IP65 isolator switch, installed at least 2 meters from the hot tub.
  • This switch should be connected to your mains consumer unit, preferably with 6mm armoured cable.
  • Hire a qualified electrical engineer for installation. Contact us for recommended contractors.
  • For 13 amp hot tubs, a 16 amp isolator switch is advised.

Base for Your Hot Tub

  • The base must be flat, level, and able to support the hot tub’s weight.
  • A concrete slab/base should be at least 4 inches thick, potentially reinforced.
  • Decking, paving slabs, or decorative pavers must have a suitable sub-base.
  • Concrete bases are preferred; other bases may lead to stability issues.
  • Avoid sinking the hot tub into the ground or decking to prevent flooding and ensure maintenance access.
  • Removable access panels are recommended for sunken hot tub installations.

Water Feed

  • Hot tubs do not require a direct water supply. Fill through the filter hole to avoid air locks.

Considerations

  • Cover lifter: Allow 18 inches of space at the back for the cover lifter.
  • Future access: Ensure there’s access for maintenance, including service hatches if surrounded by decking.

For a comprehensive overview, download our pre-installation guide or contact us at 01248 723207.

How much will my hot tub cost to run?

The running costs of our premium hot tubs are surprisingly economical, setting us apart from many competitors. Unlike others who insist on an air-source heat pump with their hot tubs, our models do not require this addition.

Consider our Jacuzzi J-300 and J-400 series as examples. Using Jacuzzis Smart Tub technology they have collected worldwide data relating to the consumption of their hot tubs. We are pleased to say that the data revealed the median worldwide average of these models consume 6kWs every 24 hours. To put this into perspective, at the time of writing this the current average price per kW is £0.32, meaning that the daily running cost would amount to approximately £1.92. This is less than the cost of a typical meal deal or a coffee!

While some of our hot tubs may run at slightly lower or higher costs, this figure provides a good baseline for comparison.

If reducing running costs is a priority, you might consider integrating an air source heat pump, potentially halving these expenses.

What is the lead time for a hot tub delivery?

The delivery lead time for a hot tub that is in stock typically ranges from 1 to 3 weeks. However, we recommend contacting us directly for a more precise estimate based on current circumstances.

In cases where the hot tub you desire is not in stock, please reach out to us. Our team will provide you with an updated and accurate lead time, ensuring you have the most current information for your planning.

What are the key maintenance steps for my hot tub?

Maintaining your hot tub is straightforward, yet there are essential practices to follow for optimal performance and longevity:

  1. Water Replacement: In a domestic setting, clean the hot tub and replace the water every 1-3 months. For commercial use, do this between guests.
  2. Filter Maintenance: In a domestic setting, clean filters every 1-2 weeks and replace them every 6 months. For commercial settings, clean filters between guests and replace them every 3 months.
  3. UV Sanitation System: If your hot tub has a UV sanitation system, replace the UV bulb every 12 months. This can be a DIY task as we stock these items, or we can do it for you.
  4. Ozone Sanitation System: For hot tubs with an ozone system, replace it every 2 years.
  5. Annual Servicing: We recommend a yearly service by one of our qualified engineers. This includes a biofilm removal treatment to eradicate bacteria and biofilm in the pipework, they will also provide you with a full health report.
  6. Water Chemistry: Regularly monitor and maintain water chemistry. Improper chemical balance can shorten the water’s lifespan and, in rare cases, affect the hot tub’s longevity.

Adhering to these maintenance guidelines will help ensure your hot tub remains in excellent condition, providing a safe and enjoyable experience.

Do you offer part exchange?

Swim spa related questions

What should I consider before my swim spa is delivered?

Access

  • Ensure there’s enough access for delivery. Swim spas are transported on a flatbed truck and require a crane to offload and position them.
  • Verify sufficient crane access at your property, mindful of overhead cables and similar obstructions.
  • Uncertain about access? We offer virtual or in-person site visits to evaluate the feasibility of installing a swim spa at your desired location.

Electrics

  • Swim spas typically need a 32amp or 40amp power supply, with an IP65 isolator switch installed no closer than 2 meters from the unit.
  • The switch should be connected to your mains consumer unit, ideally using 6mm armoured cable.
  • Engage a qualified electrical engineer for the installation. We can provide recommendations for trusted contractors.

Base for Your Swim Spa

  • The base must be flat, level, and capable of supporting the swim spa’s total filled weight, plus bathers, up to about 10 tons.
  • An uneven or unstable base can lead to acrylic cracking, not covered under warranty.
  • A concrete slab/base should be at least 5 inches thick and may need reinforcement.
  • Decking, paving slabs, or decorative pavers should have an adequate sub-base.
  • Concrete is the preferred base material to avoid stability issues.
  • Avoid embedding the swim spa into the ground or decking to prevent flooding and ensure maintenance access.
  • Install removable access panels for swim spas set in decking.

Water Feed

  • Swim spas don’t need a direct water supply. Fill them through the filter hole to prevent air locks.

Should I choose a swim spa over a traditional swimming pool?

Deciding to add a pool to your property is an exciting venture, offering health benefits and possibly increasing your home’s value. When considering a pool, especially for the first time, it’s crucial to evaluate the available space and how you plan to use it.

For occasional, casual use, a small swimming pool is adequate. However, for more active swimming or diverse uses, the choice between a traditional swimming pool and a swim spa becomes pertinent. Swim spas have risen in popularity, and here are the reasons:

Benefits of a Swim Spa Over a Swimming Pool

  1. Dual Function: A swim spa provides the combined benefits of a swimming pool and a spa, allowing for both swimming and relaxation in hydrotherapy seats.
  2. Cost-Effectiveness: Generally, swim spas are more economical than swimming pools in terms of purchase, installation, insurance, and heating costs. Maintenance expenses also tend to be lower.
  3. Space Efficiency: Swim spas, known for their compact design, can be relocated if necessary, unlike a permanent swimming pool.
  4. Advanced Technology: Swim spas are equipped with technology for adjusting jets, pump pressure, filter settings, temperature, and sometimes even music and lighting through Bluetooth controls.
  5. Versatility: Swim spas offer a range of uses, including swimming, aqua gym exercises, and hydromassage. They’re also suitable for year-round use, unlike traditional pools.
  6. Swimming Experience: Traditional pools require turning at each end based on their size, while swim spas generate a continuous current for an uninterrupted swim.
  7. Compact Design and Reduced Maintenance: Swim spas are space-efficient and require less maintenance than larger swimming pools.
  8. Lower Upfront Costs: The initial investment for a swim spa is typically lower compared to a standard swimming pool.
  9. Hydrotherapy Benefits: Similar to hot tubs, swim spas use water, air, and heat for hydrotherapy, providing muscular relief and improving circulation.

While swim spas offer numerous advantages, the final choice ultimately depends on your personal preferences, lifestyle, and the specific needs of your family. It’s important to weigh these factors to decide what best suits your requirements.

Do you need planning permission for a swim spa?

Generally, swim spas and hot tubs do not require planning permission. However, if you intend to construct a building or structure above them, it’s advisable to contact your local authority for guidance. This ensures compliance with any specific regulations or requirements in your area.

How much does it cost to maintain a swim spa versus a swimming pool?

Calculating the daily running costs of a swim spa or swimming pool can be complex, especially with fluctuating energy prices. However, you can mitigate potential cost increases with strategic planning. The running costs are influenced by several factors:

  1. Pool Size: Larger pools typically incur higher running costs.
  2. Usage Frequency: More frequent use can increase energy consumption.
  3. Location: Indoor and outdoor pools have different energy needs, with outdoor pools often requiring more heating.
  4. Electricity Costs: The current rate of electricity in your area directly affects running costs.
  5. Heating Method: The type of heating system used can impact energy efficiency. [Refer to our heating method guide for more details].
  6. Water Temperature: Higher temperatures require more energy to maintain.
  7. Insulation Method: Whether your pool is inground, above ground, or uses a liner affects heat retention and energy use.
  8. Using a Pool Cover: A cover significantly reduces heat loss, lowering the need for constant reheating.

By considering these factors, you can better estimate the running costs and implement ways to optimise energy usage for your swim spa or swimming pool.

Sauna related questions

What preparations are needed for installing an outdoor sauna?

Before installing an outdoor sauna, there are several key considerations to ensure a smooth setup:

  1. Access for Installation:
    • Our outdoor saunas are assembled on-site, piece by piece, eliminating the need for a crane.
    • Ensure clear access for our engineers to the installation site.
    • Installation typically takes 2-3 days and requires good weather conditions.
  2. Base Requirements:
    • The sauna units weigh over 1 ton, necessitating a hard, level base capable of supporting this weight.
    • The saunas are installed on beams, which are placed on your base.
    • To determine the required base size, view the ‘Feet Measurements’ under ‘More Information’ on the product page of your chosen sauna.
  3. Heating Options:
    • Electric Heating:
      • For electrically heated saunas, a suitable power supply is needed.
      • Saunas with a 6.9kW heater require a 32 amp, single-phase electrical supply from a mains consumer unit to a 32 amp rotary isolator switch.
      • Larger heaters may need a 40 amp supply and two-phase electrics.
      • Installation of the electrical supply should be done by a qualified electrician.
    • Wood-Fired Heating:
      • If choosing a wood-fired heater, a 3 pin IP rated outdoor socket is necessary for the internal LED bench lighting.
      • If you opt out of lighting, no electrical supply is needed.

These preparations are crucial for a successful installation of your outdoor sauna, ensuring it functions safely and efficiently in your chosen space.

What preparations are needed for installing an indoor sauna?

Setting up our indoor saunas varies based on the type you choose:

  1. Infrared Sauna Cabins:
    • Installation Time: These cabins can typically be set up and installed within about 30 minutes.
    • Location: Suitable for most rooms or garages.
    • Power Requirement: A 3-pin socket and a 13 amp EU plug adapter are needed.
    • Placement Advice: It’s recommended to avoid areas prone to drafts for optimal performance.
  2. Bespoke Indoor Saunas:
    • Complexity: These custom saunas are more intricate, especially due to their larger and more complex heating systems.
    • Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is essential for these saunas.
    • Power Supply: A 32 amp single-phase power supply is required, though larger supplies may be necessary depending on the heater size.
    • Consultation Requirement: Prior consultation with us is crucial. We will assess your desired location’s suitability and advise on any necessary modifications to accommodate the sauna.

For bespoke models, it’s important to work closely with us to ensure that your space is appropriately prepared for the installation, adhering to all safety and operational requirements.

What are the differences between traditional and infrared saunas?

The primary difference between traditional and infrared saunas lies in their heating mechanisms and the experience they offer:

  1. Heating Method:
    • Traditional Saunas: Heat the air around you, which in turn heats your body. This method typically involves higher temperatures.
    • Infrared Saunas: Use panels that emit infrared light waves directly heating your body before the air. This results in a more direct and gentle heating experience.
  2. Heat Sensation:
    • Infrared Saunas: Often perceived as a softer and more tolerable form of heat compared to traditional saunas.
    • Traditional Saunas: Offer a more intense heat experience.
  3. Humidity and Steam:
    • Traditional Saunas: Allow you to increase humidity by pouring water over heated stones to create steam.
    • Infrared Saunas: Do not facilitate an increase in humidity or steam generation.
  4. Customization Options:
    • Some bespoke traditional saunas may include combi heaters with compartments for water, allowing you to adjust humidity levels.
  5. Energy Efficiency:
    • Infrared Saunas: Generally more economical to run than traditional saunas.

Choosing between a traditional and an infrared sauna depends on your personal needs and preferences, such as desired heat intensity, humidity level, and economic considerations.

How do I maintain my sauna?

Maintaining your sauna is relatively straightforward. Here’s a breakdown based on the type of sauna:

  1. Outdoor Saunas:
    • Wood Treatment: Regularly treat both the exterior and interior wood.
    • Weather Shield: Apply a ‘Weather Shield’ product on the exterior at least once a year to protect against weather elements and keep the wood looking fresh.
    • Increased Frequency Near Sea: If the sauna is close to the sea, increase the frequency of applying ‘Weather Shield’ to combat the harsher conditions.
    • Rain Resistance: This treatment also increases the unit’s resistance to heavy rain.
  2. Infrared Sauna Cabins:
    • Minimal Maintenance: These cabins require little to no ongoing maintenance.
    • Wood Treatment: Treating the wood is optional and at the user’s discretion.
  3. Saunas with Rock Heaters:
    • Periodic Cleaning of Rocks: Clean and inspect the rocks in the heater periodically, based on how often you use the sauna.
    • Frequency: For example, if used twice a week, clean and replace stones where necessary twice a year; if used thrice a week, then three times a year.
    • Stone Maintenance: Over time, stones may shrink, affecting sauna performance. Remove small stones, vacuum the heater compartment, and replace them with new stones as needed.

By following these maintenance guidelines, you can ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your sauna.

Pergola related questions

How can I find out about the warranties for your pergolas?

  1. Navigate to our website and select your chosen pergola by clicking on ‘view product’.
  2. Once on the product page, scroll down to the bottom section titled ‘More Information’.
  3. Here, you’ll find a link or document labelled ‘warranty information’. Open this to view the detailed warranty specifics for that particular model.

This process ensures that you have access to all the necessary warranty details relevant to your selected pergola.

What steps should I take to prepare for the delivery and installation of a pergola?

Preparing for the delivery and installation of a pergola involves a few crucial steps to ensure a secure and successful setup:

  1. Solid Foundation:
    • The pergola must be installed on a solid surface.
    • Beneath the finished surface, there should be a concrete pad or similar secure base.
  2. Pre-installation Groundwork:
    • Groundworks should be completed before the installers arrive, as they do not provide this service.
    • You may need to hire a local tradesperson for this task.
  3. Accessing Floorplan Information:
    • We provide a floorplan indicating the placement of the pergola’s floor plates.
    • To access this, select your desired pergola on our website, click ‘view product’, and find the floorplan under ‘More Information’ at the bottom of the product page.
  4. Concrete Pads for Tiles or Decking:
    • For tiles: Install concrete pads approximately 40x40x40cm beneath the tiles.
    • For decking: Install concrete pads or additional structural joists beneath the decking where the pergola will stand.
  5. Finish the Surface:
    • Complete your surface with tiles or decking so that our installers can drill through it into the secure base below during installation.
  6. Pergola Size and Groundworks Compatibility:
    • Ideally, choose your pergola size before conducting groundworks.
    • If the patio/deck is already laid, ensure the underlying base is secure enough. Materials like Type 1, post mix, or sand are not suitable.
    • For composite decking, ensure there are structural beams beneath where the pergola’s footplates will sit.
  7. Level Legs:
    • Ensure that both of the front legs are level with each other. The back legs of the pergola must also be level with each other. This is crucial for a stable installation.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your site is properly prepared for the pergola installation, leading to a smooth and successful setup.

Can a pergola be installed on a sloped surface?

Yes, aluminium louvered roof pergolas are designed to utilize the natural slope of your existing surface for effective rain drainage, so a slight slope is actually necessary. However, it’s important to ensure the slope is within acceptable limits for a proper installation:

  1. Maximum Slope Allowance: Your surface should have a maximum slope of 1:80. This is in line with standard building regulations for patios.
  2. Slope Calculation Example: Over a distance of 3410mm, a 1:80 slope equates to a fall of 42mm.
  3. Ideal Slope for Deluxe Screens: For optimal functioning of deluxe screens, a slope of about 10mm is recommended. Beyond this, the screens may not operate smoothly.

It’s crucial to accurately measure your area to ensure the slope is appropriate for pergola installation. If the slope exceeds these guidelines, the pergola’s functionality, particularly the screens, may be compromised.

Is it possible to connect a pergola to an existing building?

Yes, a pergola can be connected to your building, but it’s important to note that the outside legs of the pergola frame are always required and cannot be removed. To integrate the pergola with your building:

  1. Footplate Placement: We can position the footplates flush against your building’s wall.
  2. Weatherproofing: Flashing can be added to bridge the gap between the building and the top of the pergola’s roof beam, ensuring the structure remains watertight in connection with your building.

If you’re interested in this option, please contact us to discuss the specifics. We can provide more detailed information and ensure that the pergola is installed in a way that complements and integrates effectively with your existing structure.

Is it possible to install a pergola in a windy location?

Yes, you can install a pergola in a windy location, but there are important considerations to be aware of:

  1. Customer’s Decision: While we can provide guidance on installing pergolas in windy areas, the final decision to proceed with installation lies with you, the customer.
  2. Expert Advice: Our team is available to offer advice to help you make an informed decision based on your specific circumstances and the wind conditions you inform us about at your desired location.
  3. Liability: Please be aware that Concept Spa Ltd cannot be held responsible for any consequences that may arise from choosing to install a pergola in a windy area.
